She provides health care to refugee children

Upstate pediatrician Andrea Shaw, MDUpstate pediatrician Andrea Shaw, MD, cares for many of the children of refugees who resettle in Syracuse. They come from a variety of countries, including Eastern Europe, Somalia, Afghanistan, Ukraine, the Republic of Congo, Sudan and Syria, often fleeing violence, persecution and other hardships. She describes her role as a caregiver and as a member of the Syracuse community, a safe haven for immigrants and refugees with resettlement rates that rank among the highest in the country. Shaw, who first became involved in helping refugees through her church during high school, encourages fellow Central New Yorkers to "keep your mind and heart open" to the refugees they may meet in grocery stores, in places of worship or in waiting rooms of doctor's offices.
